About staying in Port Edward
Port Edward is the last town on the KZN South Coast before the Eastern Cape border, which is the Mtamvuna River. It is about 153 km south-west of Durban and 46 km past Port Shepstone. Silver Beach is the main beach, below Tragedy Hill. Leisure Bay, Palm Beach, Ivy Beach and Munster lie to the north and are quieter, with smaller beaches. Stay near Silver Beach if you want the town's shops close by.
Summer is hot and humid with most of the rain. Winter is mild and dry, and good for walking in the reserves. December and Easter are the busy times. Port Edward beach had pilot Blue Flag status in the 2025 awards.
From Durban, take the N2 to Port Shepstone and then the R61 south. Allow about two hours. Margate Airport is about 32 km north-east, and King Shaka International is about 190 km away.
Nearby: uMtamvuna Nature Reserve, which starts on the edge of town and runs 19 km inland along a river gorge with cliffs up to 240 m; the Red Desert Nature Reserve, a small patch of red sand inland of town; the Sao Joao monument on the beach, which marks a 1552 Portuguese shipwreck.
Tip: the uMtamvuna trails are steep in places and suit fit walkers. Spring brings the grassland flowers.
