About staying in Ramsgate
This is Ramsgate on the KZN South Coast, a small village just south-west of Margate, not the town in Kent. It sits at the mouth of the Bilanhlolo River, whose lagoon is known as the Blue Lagoon. Stay near the lagoon and main beach to walk to the sea, or along Marine Drive towards Southbroom for quieter streets. Margate's shops and restaurants are about 3 km away.
Ramsgate beach held full Blue Flag status in the 2025 awards, which means water quality, safety and facilities were checked. Summer is hot and humid with most of the rain; winter is mild and dry. December and Easter school holidays are the busiest times on this stretch of coast.
From Durban, drive about 145 km south on the N2 to Port Shepstone, then the R61 or the R620 (Marine Drive). Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours. Margate Airport is a few kilometres away and has had scheduled flights from Johannesburg. King Shaka International is about 170 km north.
Nearby: Margate main beach (about 3 km); Uvongo falls and lagoon (about 7 km); Southbroom, with two golf courses and the Mpenjati Lagoon Nature Reserve, a few kilometres south; Marina and Trafalgar Blue Flag beaches further south; Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, inland of Port Shepstone.
Tip: Ramsgate is small, so a stay here works well if you want Margate nearby without staying in the busiest part of town.
