About staying in Wilderness
Wilderness is a seaside village on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, South Africa, about 15 km east of George on the N2. It sits where the Touw River meets the sea, with a chain of lakes behind the dunes. Stay near the village centre and the Touw River mouth to walk to cafés, the lagoon and the main beach. Stay along the lakes, Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei, for paddling and birding. The hills around Hoekwil are quieter and higher up, with views over the coast.
The main beach is a Blue Flag beach. Its safer bathing spots include Leentjiesklip at the western end, the 'Steps' and the Touw River mouth. Lifeguards are on duty from 7am to 7pm in season. Summer is the beach season, and the December holidays and Easter are the busy periods. Winters are mild. The nearest airport is George, about 20 minutes' drive. From Cape Town it is about 435 km on the N2.
Nearby: the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, which protects five lakes and the Serpentine; the Half-collared Kingfisher Trail, a 7 km circular walk with rock pools, starting near Ebb and Flow; the Map of Africa viewpoint, a short drive up a signed gravel road; Dolphin's Point on the N2, a lookout for dolphins and whales; and Knysna, about 45 km east.
Tip: floods closed the national park camp and trails in April 2024. After heavy rain, check with SANParks that the trails are open before you go.
