About staying in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is a university town in the Cape Winelands, about 50 km east of Cape Town. It was founded in 1679 and is the second-oldest European settlement in the Western Cape, after Cape Town. The historic centre, around Dorp Street, Church Street and the Braak, is walkable and close to restaurants and museums. Wine farms lie along the roads out of town: the R44 south towards Somerset West, the R310 over Helshoogte Pass towards Franschhoek, and the Jonkershoek valley to the east. Staying out there is quieter, but you will drive for most meals.
Summers are warm and dry, and winters are cool and wet. The December holidays and Easter are busy, as are university graduation weeks and festivals such as the Woordfees, whose dates vary by year.
Cape Town International Airport is about 35 km away. Take the N2 towards Somerset West, exit at Baden Powell Drive and follow the R310 north. Allow 30 to 40 minutes outside peak traffic.
Nearby: Dorp Street, lined with some of the oldest buildings in town. The Stellenbosch Wine Route, started in 1971 and the oldest in South Africa. Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, about 9 km east, for hiking and mountain biking. Helderberg Nature Reserve, about 23 km south via the R44. Franschhoek, roughly 30 km east over Helshoogte Pass.
Tip: the wine farms are spread out, so book a driver or a tour if you plan to taste at more than one.
