About staying in Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay, usually called Plett, is on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, between Knysna and the Tsitsikamma. The town sits on a bay with the Robberg Peninsula at its southern end. Central Beach is closest to the town centre. Lookout Beach lies to the east. Robberg Beach runs south-west towards the peninsula. Keurboomstrand, further east near the Keurbooms River mouth, is quieter. Pick the town centre if you want to walk to shops and restaurants, and the beach suburbs if you want sand on your doorstep.
Summer, roughly October to March, is warm and dry enough for the beach. The December holidays and Easter are the busy periods, when the town fills up and traffic on the N2 slows. Southern right whales visit from about July to December. Plett's own airport has been closed to scheduled flights since 2024, so most people fly into George Airport, about 100 km west, and drive the N2. From Gqeberha it is about 230 km, around 2.5 hours. From Cape Town it is about 500 km, around six hours.
Nearby: Robberg Nature Reserve, about 8 km south, with a 9.2 km Point circuit that takes about four hours; Knysna, 33 km west; Nature's Valley in the Garden Route National Park, about 30 km east; and the Tsitsikamma at Storms River Mouth, about 40 km beyond Nature's Valley.
Tip: the main beaches have shark spotters and set lifeguard hours. Swim where and when the lifeguards are on duty.
