About staying in Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay is a harbour town on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, about halfway between Cape Town and Gqeberha. Santos and De Bakke are close to the town centre and the harbour. The Point, near the Cape St Blaize lighthouse, is good for sea views and the start of the coastal trail. Hartenbos and Little Brak River lie north-east along the bay, each with its own Blue Flag beach. Dana Bay lies to the west. The municipality says Dana Bay is not suitable for swimming because of dangerous currents.
The climate is mild all year, and most rain falls at night. The December holidays and Easter are the busy periods. Lifeguards work at the Blue Flag and main beaches from 1 December to early February. For 2025/26, De Bakke, Glentana, Hartenbos and Little Brak River have full Blue Flag status. The nearest airport is George, about 40 km east on the N2. Cape Town is about 400 km west on the N2, roughly 4.5 hours.
Nearby: the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex and the Post Office Tree in town; the Cape St Blaize lighthouse, built in 1864, and the cave below it; the St Blaize Trail, 13.5 km along the cliffs from the cave to Dana Bay; and George, about 45 km east.
Tip: the St Blaize Trail has no water and few exits. Arrange a lift at the far end and do not walk it alone.
