About staying in Knysna
Knysna is a Garden Route town in the Western Cape, built on the northern shore of the Knysna Lagoon. The lagoon opens to the sea between two sandstone cliffs, the Knysna Heads. Stay in or near the town centre and Thesen Island if you want to walk to restaurants and the lagoon boats. Lagoon-side suburbs such as Leisure Isle and Belvidere are quieter; Belvidere is about 8 km west on the far shore. For a sea beach, look at Brenton-on-Sea, about 12 km west, where a 5 km beach runs to Buffalo Bay. Buffalo Bay is popular for swimming and surfing.
Summer is warm and the December holidays and Easter are the busy periods. October and November are usually the wettest months. The Knysna Oyster Festival runs for about ten days in late June or early July. Most visitors fly into George Airport and drive about 60 km east on the N2, roughly an hour. From Cape Town it is about 480 km on the N2, around six hours.
Nearby: the viewpoints on the eastern Knysna Head, in town; Noetzie beach and its stone castles, about 10 minutes east; Harkerville forest trails, about 20 km east; the Big Tree, an Outeniqua yellowwood of over 800 years, at Diepwalle, about 23 km away in the Garden Route National Park; and Plettenberg Bay, 33 km east.
Tip: the lagoon is home to the Knysna seahorse, and some areas near Belvidere allow only non-motorised craft. Check the rules before you launch a boat or jet ski.
