About staying in Hermanus
Hermanus is a coastal town on Walker Bay in the Overstrand area of the Western Cape, about 115 km south-east of Cape Town. Most people stay near the Cliff Path, which runs for roughly 11 to 12 km from the New Harbour in the west to Grotto Beach and the Klein River mouth in the east. Voëlklip and the streets behind Grotto Beach are closer to the long sandy beaches. Onrus and Sandbaai, to the west, are quieter and more residential.
Southern right whales are in Walker Bay from about June to early December, and the Whale Festival runs over a weekend in late September or early October. Expect the town to be full then, and over the December school holidays and Easter.
The nearest airport is Cape Town International. From Cape Town, take the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass and turn onto the R43 at Bot River, or follow the slower R44 coastal road through Gordon's Bay and Kleinmond. Allow about an hour and a half.
Nearby: Gearing's Point and the Old Harbour for land-based whale watching, in town. Fernkloof Nature Reserve, on the town's edge, with walking trails through fynbos. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine route, which starts just west of town. Gansbaai, about 40 km east, for shark cage diving and boat trips.
Tip: the best whale viewing is from the cliffs, so a place within walking distance of the Cliff Path saves driving and parking in season.
