About staying in George
George is the main commercial town of the Garden Route in the Western Cape, South Africa. It sits on a plateau between the Outeniqua Mountains and the sea, about halfway between Cape Town and Gqeberha. The town itself is inland, so choose your base by what you want. Stay in town or on the golf estates for shops, restaurants and quick airport access. Stay at Herolds Bay or Victoria Bay if you want the beach. Herolds Bay has a sheltered swimming beach. Victoria Bay is a small cove known for its right-hand surf break. Wilderness is about 15 km east.
Summer runs from December to February and the climate is mild all year. Winter, June to August, is cooler and wetter. The December holidays and Easter are the busy periods on the coast. Southern right whales pass between June and November. George Airport is about 7 km from the town centre, with direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Bloemfontein. By road, George is about 420 km from Cape Town and 330 km from Gqeberha on the N2.
Nearby: the Outeniqua Pass and Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo, about 57 km north; the Montagu Pass, opened in 1848 and still unaltered; the Garden Route Botanical Garden and the Outeniqua Transport Museum in town; and the Map of Africa viewpoint above Wilderness.
Tip: the Seven Passes Road, the old gravel and tar road that links the Wilderness area to Knysna, is a slower and quieter alternative to the N2.
