About staying in Franschhoek
Franschhoek is a small town at the end of a valley in the Cape Winelands, about 75 km east of Cape Town. French Huguenot refugees settled here from 1688, and many farms still carry French names. The village itself is compact. Staying on or near Huguenot Road, the main street, puts you within walking distance of restaurants, shops and the Huguenot Monument. Farm stays along the R45 between Groendal, La Motte and the village are quieter, but you will need a car or the wine tram.
Summers are warm and dry, and winters are cool and wet. The grape harvest runs from about February to March. Busy times include the December holidays, Easter, the Bastille Festival in July, Franschhoek Uncorked in September and the Cap Classique festival in early December.
The nearest airport is Cape Town International. Drive the N2 and take the R310 through Stellenbosch and over Helshoogte Pass, or the N1 and the R45 through Paarl. Allow about an hour.
Nearby: the Huguenot Monument and Huguenot Memorial Museum, at the top end of the village. The Franschhoek Wine Tram, a hop-on, hop-off route between wine farms in the valley. The Franschhoek Pass, which climbs east out of the valley towards Villiersdorp. Stellenbosch and Paarl, each roughly 30 km away.
Tip: if you plan to taste wine, stay in the village or near a tram stop so you don't have to drive between farms.
