About staying in Graskop

Graskop is a small town on the Mpumalanga escarpment, at about 1,400 m above sea level. It started as a gold-mining camp in the 1880s. It sits on the Panorama Route, where the land drops about 700 m to the lowveld.

Staying in town keeps you within walking distance of shops and restaurants, and the Graskop Gorge is just outside town. Stays north along the R534 are closer to the viewpoints. The sights lie north and south of town, so it works as a base for day trips.

The town is higher and cooler than the lowveld, and winter nights are cold. Mist and low cloud can hide the views, so keep a clear day for God's Window and the other viewpoints. December, Easter and long weekends are the busiest times.

From Johannesburg it is about 390 km, roughly four and a half hours. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Kruger Mpumalanga International near Mbombela.

Nearby: - The Pinnacle, 6 km, and God's Window, about 9 km north on the R534. - Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls, about 15 to 17 km north. - Bourke's Luck Potholes, 35 km, and the Three Rondavels, 41 km, on the R532. - Pilgrim's Rest, 23 km, and Sabie, 30 km. - Phabeni Gate into Kruger, about 55 km via Hazyview.

Tip: the Graskop tourism site suggests doing the waterfalls south of town in the morning and the viewpoints to the north in the afternoon, for the best light.
