About staying in Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit is a small town in Limpopo, at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg, west of the Kruger National Park. Tourism and farming drive the local economy, with mangoes and citrus grown around it. Private game reserves and wildlife estates surround the town.

Where you stay depends on the plan. Wildlife estates near town keep you close to shops, the airport and the roads to Kruger. Lodges on the private reserves offer guided drives instead of self-drive.

The dry winter months, roughly May to September, are best for game viewing. Summer is hot and wet. Hoedspruit is in a malaria area. SANParks gives the season as October to April, with March and April the highest risk. December and Easter are the busiest periods.

Eastgate Airport at Hoedspruit has scheduled flights from Johannesburg and shares the runway with the air force base. By road it is about 450 to 500 km from Johannesburg, around five to six hours via the N4 and R36. The R36 crosses the Abel Erasmus Pass on the way.

Nearby: - Orpen Gate, the nearest Kruger gate, about 70 km. - Phalaborwa Gate, about 75 km. - Blyde River Canyon and the Blyderivierpoort Dam, about 30 km. - Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, just south of town on the R40.

Tip: Kruger's gate opening and closing times change by month. Check SANParks before a day trip, and leave enough time for the drive back to Orpen.
