About staying in Scottburgh
Scottburgh is a beach town on the KZN South Coast, about 53 km south-west of Durban. It sits just south of the Mpambanyoni River mouth, with grassy banks that slope down to the main beach. Stay near the main beach if you want to walk to the sand. Pennington, a few kilometres south, is quieter and its beach held full Blue Flag status in the 2025 awards. Park Rynie and Umkomaas are the other nearby bases.
Summer is hot and humid with most of the rain. Winter is mild and dry. The sardine run passes this coast from about May to July, and July to November is the main season for diving with ragged-tooth sharks on Aliwal Shoal. December and Easter are the busiest times. Scottburgh beach had pilot Blue Flag status in 2025.
From Durban, take the N2 south and exit at Dududu Road, or use the R102. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour. King Shaka International is about 90 km away.
Nearby: Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area, a reef about 5 km offshore, with dive launches from Scottburgh and Umkomaas; Crocworld Conservation Centre (about 4 km); Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, with grassland, coastal forest and over 300 bird species (about 20 km inland); Pennington beach (about 6 km).
Tip: Scottburgh is close enough to Durban for a weekend, so book early for long weekends as well as the school holidays.
