About staying in Margate
This is Margate on the KZN South Coast of South Africa, not the seaside town in Kent. It lies about 127 km south-west of Durban and 20 km past Port Shepstone. Stay near the main beach if you want to walk to the sea, shops and restaurants. Uvongo, about 4 km north, is quieter and has a 23 m waterfall that drops into a lagoon by the beach. Manaba Beach sits between the two, and Ramsgate is just to the south.
The coast is subtropical. Summer is hot and humid with most of the rain; winter is mild and mostly dry. December and Easter are the busy times, and Marine Drive gets heavy traffic over the festive season. Book early for those dates.
From Durban, take the N2 south to Port Shepstone and then the R61 or the R620 coast road. Allow about 1.5 hours. King Shaka International is about 166 km away. Margate also has a small airport with scheduled flights from Johannesburg; check the current timetable.
Nearby: Uvongo falls and beach (about 4 km); Ramsgate's Blue Lagoon and Blue Flag beach (about 3 km); Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, a 27 km long gorge about 35 km inland of Port Shepstone; Trafalgar and Marina, both full Blue Flag beaches in the 2025 awards, a short drive south.
Tip: swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty, and check which beaches have shark nets before you go in.
