About staying in Jeffreys Bay
Jeffreys Bay, or J-Bay, is a surf town in the Kouga area of the Eastern Cape, about 75 km south-west of Gqeberha on the N2. Where you stay depends on why you are going. Surfers stay near Supertubes, the long right-hand point break the town is known for. For swimming, look near Dolphin Beach, the main beach, which was a Blue Flag beach in the 2024/25 season. Kabeljous, at the northern end, has an estuary and a nature reserve. Aston Bay and Paradise Beach are small coastal villages about 5 km south.
For surfers the season is winter. June to August brings the biggest swells, and good waves can run from April to September. The World Surf League's J-Bay Open is held in July. For beach holidays, summer is the season, and the December holidays and Easter are the busy periods. The nearest airport is Chief Dawid Stuurman International in Gqeberha, about an hour's drive.
Nearby: the Seekoei River Nature Reserve, between Aston Bay and Paradise Beach; the Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum in town; St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis, about 30 minutes south-west; Gqeberha, about 75 km east; and Addo Elephant National Park, about two hours' drive via Gqeberha.
Tip: Supertubes is a fast, powerful reef break for experienced surfers. Beginners should learn on the gentler beach breaks instead and ask a local surf school where to start.
