About staying in Gqeberha
Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth, is the main city of Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape, on Algoa Bay. For a beach stay, look at Summerstrand and Humewood. They are close to the beachfront promenade and to Kings, Humewood and Hobie beaches, which all held full Blue Flag status in the 2025 awards. Walmer is inland and close to the airport. Central, near the Donkin Reserve, suits a short city or business stay.
The climate is mild all year, with warm summers and cool winters, and the city is known for wind. December, Easter and the school holidays are the busiest times at the beaches.
Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport is in Walmer, about 3 km south of the city centre. By road, Gqeberha is about 770 km east of Cape Town on the N2, a drive of about nine hours through the Garden Route.
Nearby: Addo Elephant National Park (about 72 km north); Cape Recife Nature Reserve and its 1851 lighthouse, just south of Summerstrand; Route 67, a walking trail of 67 public artworks that starts near the Donkin Reserve in the city centre; Sardinia Bay beach on the south-western edge of the metro.
Tip: if you plan to visit Addo, a stay on the northern side of the city or near the N2 saves time on the morning drive.
