About staying in Addo
Addo is a small farming town in the Sundays River Valley in the Eastern Cape, about 72 km north-east of Gqeberha. It is the nearest town to the main gate of Addo Elephant National Park, which is about 15 km away.
Most people stay in or around Addo village, on the citrus farms along the Sundays River, or near the park's main gate. Colchester, at the Sundays River mouth, suits people who also want the coast. The park's Matyholweni Gate is about 3 km off the N2 there.
The park is in a malaria-free area, so it works all year. SANParks counts October to March as summer and April to September as winter, when nights get cold. School holidays, especially December and Easter, are the busiest times, and the park's rest camps fill early.
The nearest airport is Chief Dawid Stuurman International in Gqeberha. SANParks advises travellers from Gqeberha to avoid the R335 through Motherwell for safety reasons. Use the N2 instead. Either enter at Matyholweni near Colchester, or take the N10 and the Paterson road to the main camp, about 120 km and an hour and a quarter.

Tip: the road through the park from Matyholweni is closed to buses and to cars towing trailers or caravans. If you tow, use the Paterson route.
